Donna del Marmo - Marianna Blier

Sculpture
Marianna Blier was born in 1976 in Astrakhan, Russia. She studied art at art school and later at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, as well as at the summer academies of Salzburg and Berlin. In 2016, Marianna began working with marble in Carrara, and from the very first day of sculpting, it became impossible for her to stop. For her, marble is not just a material; it is her co-creator, guiding her imagination throughout the creative process. The final work often differs significantly from the initial sketch. Very often, her images come to her in dreams. Her gaze is directed toward classical antiquity, Renaissance Italy, and indigenous cultures—creative sources for new interpretations of sculptures, stones, and stories. Her research takes her to cathedrals, events, and museums across Europe and beyond. But it is the mountains and sea of Carrara and northern Tuscany that truly inspire her. In the rare moments when she is not immersed in her studio, she walks in nature—from the Apuan Alps to the Mediterranean coast. Marianna’s sculptures explore what flesh and marble have in common, ancient myths that remain highly relevant in contemporary social conversations, as well as allegories of creation and what it means to be an artist seeking beauty in today’s world.
Marianna Blier lives and works between Vienna and Carrara. Her studio is located at Via San Martino 1, Carrara.
